Balance of Power
- HE:
- I sure hope this play isn't too heavy. The last thing I need
is to sit through some alcoholic playwright's grim and gritty
idea of the great American tragedy. Do you know anything
about it?
- SHE:
- The play? Not a thing but the title, "The Nightingale, the Swallow,
and the Hawk," and that's not much help. Never heard of the
playwright, either. It could be about anything.
- HE:
- Any chance it's a trained bird act? That would be just about the
right level of challenge for me tonight?
- SHE:
- I wouldn't count on it.
Balance of Power is one act play inspired by the myth of Philomela, Procne,
and Tereus.
The myth comes from Ovid's
Metamorphoses, Book Six. (This link is to
Columbia University's Dante project. The myth in question is down a ways
on the page.)
